Heritage is more than our history and products. It’s about the culture, people and country that have shaped Suunto through the decades and made it become what it is today. Evolution is natural, yet some things remain an integral part of our brand and DNA; accuracy, robustness, reliability, design and being Finnish to the core.
Suunto was founded over 80 years ago by Tuomas Vohlonen, a Finnish adventurer. In 1936, unsatisfied with current technology, knee deep in snow, and in the all-day Arctic darkness, he invented a liquid-filled compass with a steadier, more accurate needle. He was a revolutionary. And he was never lost.
Way back in 1939, a Finnish soldier was shot by a Russian sniper during the Winter War. He lived to tell the tale. The bullet hit the Suunto M-311 field compass in his pocket.
We don’t believe in luck, we believe that for over 80 years we have created products that will never let you down.
The people who use our products are part of our story. Where you go, we go. Like in 1965, when a British sports diver discovered his Suunto compass still worked underwater, and we introduced our first diving compass, the SK-4.
Finland tests us, like we test our products. As much as we love it, our cold, dark country demands a lot from us. And because we demand a lot from our products, we take them into the real world for testing. If they can survive Finland, they can survive anything.
For over 80 years we have been constantly learning and fine-tuning our technology, allowing us to create products you can rely on, even in the most extreme conditions. No, especially in the most extreme situations.
We are proud to say we are from Finland. There are many reasons for that, but one that stands out: Just like our Founder Tuomas Vohlonen – we Finns set our own standards, and the best is never enough.
